Amplify: Lara Downes and Denyce Graves

Lara Downes and Denise Graves

Denyce Graves is a renowned Grammy and Emmy-winner who is celebrated only for her prestigious performances, but for her tireless dedication to mentorship and cultural advocacy. She has worked as a teacher and a role model, nurturing the next generation of musicians, particularly at institutions like the Ellington School of the Arts and the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists program. Graves' passion extends beyond teaching, as she’s also deeply committed to preserving the legacy of trailblazing Black opera singer Mary Cardwell Dawson, who founded the National Negro Opera Company in 1941. Graves led efforts to restore Dawson’s historic building and helped produce a musical about Dawson’s life. This is just one example of Graves’ commitment to using her platform to make a difference, promoting projects that can heal and uplift communities through music.
