Chamber Music San Francisco inaugurates its June Series with the piano duo of Greg Anderson & Elizabeth Joy Roe, with concerts in Walnut Creek, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. It’s a program that keeps more to their classical roots, rather than including some of the arrangements they’ve done of popular songs.

“We’ve done outdoor, fun wild events in Walnut Creek,” Anderson says, “But this time we’re presenting just a serious classical recital program, and it’s something we haven’t been able to bring to the Bay Area in at least the recent past.” They’re known for their arrangements, and there will be several of those, but Roe says a few pieces are staples of the repertoire. “We’re playing some big works for piano duo, including Rachmaninoff’s first suite for two pianos, which is subtitled Fantasie Tableaux. It’s actually featured on our latest album, Mother. It’s a gorgeous, very romantic and poetic work… And then there’s another big two piano standard work, and it is Ravel’s apocalyptic ‘La Valse.’ And then around that, we feature some of our own takes on some great classical works.” Greg Anderson continues: “We actually hit up two operas, we’re going to perform a fantasy we’ve created based on music from Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, as well as a fantasy we wrote based on Bizet’s Carmen.” They’ll also be revisiting the works of Astor Piazzolla, including his “Libertango.”
