Pet of the Week (Archives)

Here are archive photos and bios for KDFC's Pet of the Week:

August 25th

KDFC listener Bien Sur writes: "Daphne most likes to listen to opera as she hangs out by a swimming pool. At 11 1/2 she deserves her quiet times."

August 15th

Mary Stompe writes about her Bahamian Potcake, (aka street dog). I adopted him while vacationing in Abaco, Bahamas.  He shares his home in Novato with a golden retriever and a yellow lab, a 16 year old human brother and his human mom and dad.  We’ve clocked Duncan running at over 30 mph.  KDFC is the calming effect on Duncan.

August 11th

Cheryl Tillotson, Novato, introduces us to her classical rabbits, Castor & Pollux

"Castor and her brother Pollux were particularly enchanted by some Chopin waltzes played on Hoyt's morning program.  They're frequent patrons of ballet, helping to build practice barres and helping to select music for classes.  Such busy bunnies!"

For August 4th:

Sharon Rasmussen introduces us to her two dogs, Wolfgang and Sheba

"My dogs, Wolfgang (yes, for Mozart) and Sheba (she thinks she's Queen of) listen to KDFC while I'm at work.  KDFC helps mellow them, so they don't eat the furniture while I'm gone!  We would all have to sit on the floor if it weren't for KDFC!"

For July 29th:

Congratulations to Patricia Murphy and her cat, Sumo, who won our Grand Prize in the Meow Mix “Think Like a Cat” promotion.  Sumo likes listening to good music (KDFC) when trying to get to sleep or sitting on Patricia's lap.

We had hundreds of cute cat entries!  Patricia won a Meow Mix prize pack, which includes:  a $100 spa certificate from spafinder.com, good for over 60 Bay Area spas, some great Meow Mix merchandise -  “The Meaning of Meow” book, a hoodie, and a blanket.  And, she also receives a KDFC hat and a copy of KDFC’s Islands of Sanity 4 for her KDFC lovin’ cat.  The cat has promised to share the CD with Patricia…

For the Week of July 21st:
Meet the Classical Camel, 'Benny Hill'

We are "ranch-sitting" for some friends here in Half Moon Bay and one of the many ranch residents is a camel named "Benny Hill".  Benny normally listens to Country & Western, but I thought we should broaden his musical horizons while we are here and introduce him to classical music!  Here he is with my son listening to KDFC!  When our friends return, Benny will be so refined they won't know what happened!

For the week of July 11th: 'The Dude'

Jamie Jones writes in and introduces us to "The Dude", writing...

"Meet “the Dude”, the most mellow cat known to man. His mellow moods are enhanced by listening to the soft tones of Classical Music on KDFC.  He loves to chill and just ponder the meaning of “Mellow” as he listens.

Like most of us, The Dude also has a rich fantasy life as well. He envisions himself as an “Opera Dude” and loves to belt out a tune or two when he thinks no one is paying attention. When discovered, he returns to “Mellow Dude” and waits until he’s alone before singing again. At night, he loves duets and will sing out until he’s sung back to and will continue duets for as long as one is willing to participate.

As most good tenors, Dude is a sizeable guy, weighing in at 25+ pounds. He feels his size is what gives his voice it’s rich operatic tone!  I think he just has a fondness for kitty treats.

For those interested. The Dude is a Ragdoll breed of cat, known for their size and calm behavior. The Dude was rescued from an animal shelter when he was 7 years old and has been sharing my live for the last 5 years. For those that love lap cats…check out Ragdolls they’re all about the lap!

Thank you for allowing me to share “The Dude” experience with you and your listeners."

For the Week of June 23rd

Agnes and Omar from Oklahoma City

Agnes was found wandering the mean streets of South Oklahoma City.  She was obviously a very sick little girl, just skin and bone.  We rushed her to the Emergency Vet Clinic where she tested positive for Parvo.  After 5 days of isolation in ICU she was welcomed home by Omar.

Omar had been rescued a year earlier from the Animal Shelter in Stillwater OK.  He was on death row, a stray with only one eye. He was considered "unadobtable" except to a network of people who want to help homeless animals.  Ciera Henry drove to Stillwater OK and brought  him to our home in Oklahoma City where they listen to kdfc.com
This week, we also feature our very own, KDFC Morning newscaster Betsy O'Connor and her pup Mickey from Oakland Hills.

For the Week of June 16th

Susan Beauchamp says of her two Siamese cats, Capitan and Beau:
"Capitan is the seal point, the older of the two. Beau is the blue point and the bothersome youngster.

I leave KDFC on for them when I leave for work in the morning.  I think their favorite music pieces are string quartets and anything else with violin and cello, since their human companions play those instruments.  They especially love Schubert.
"

For the Week of June 9th

Kathleen Wilson, San Francisco, says of her horse Ben:

Ben and I have been together for 8 years. He is Thoroughbred with a sense of humor. He has learned to untie himself to go searching for treats - including climbing into strangers' trailers. Everyone at the barn loves him as he will happily run through his repertoire of tricks including taking a bow, shaking hands and answering yes/no questions. I really think that he thinks he is a VERY big dog. Ben and I love to ride to classical music and KDFC is perfect to pipe into the arena or throughout the barn. The Morning Blend and the Big One at One are best!

For the Week of June 2nd:

John Kuhn & Frank Poyer
of San Francisco say of their schnoodles, Blanche & Stella DuBois

"As they lounge on their couch during the day, they are accompanied by their favorite radio station, KDFC. Their favorite music: like their heritage, French and German -- a little Ravel and an occasional Mahler symphony!"

For the Week of May 26th

Laura Pound, Redwood City, CA

“Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.” – William Congreve

And here's the proof! Ancient enemies brought together by their mutual love of classical music, Daisy (pit bull) and Pez (blue point Siamese) relaxing together while listening to their favorite station, KDFC.

Pez was a stray. Its hard to believe anyone would let such a beautiful and affectionate cat just run away! Pez loves dogs, even strange ones. I'm a pet sitter, and he always loved it when I brought dogs home to stay with me. He's lucky that the dogs are so shocked at his loving behavior that they get confused, and don't chase him!

For the Week of May 19th

John Steinhause (Livermore CA) says of his dog Max:

"Here is a photo of my wonderful Australian Shepherd, Max, who is clearly addicted to KDFC. He used to pace the floor most of the night and it wasn't until I tried leaving my stereo on all night with KDFC that he totally calmed down. Now all of us have the most peaceful and wonderful evenings together."

For the Week of May 12th
Meet Jackie (at right) and Tucker, Jack Russell terriers that live in Oakland and love classical music. They listen to KDFC all day (“it keeps them calm”) while the humans are at work – and why not? Their roommate is KDFC’s own John Evans.
