Thanks for taking time to give us your feedback in this survey. Nearly 2,000 of you took it, and overall you feel KDFC is doing better than ever. Here are some other highlights:
- 88% of you are very or completely satisfied with KDFC’s music selections. 3% of you are not satisfied. 90% of you are happy with KDFC’s overall presentation. 2% are not.
- While 59% of you say you’re listening to the station about the same amount as last year (when KDFC was bought by a new company), a third of you say you are listening more. 7% are listening less for various reasons.
- 93% of you like the newer selections we’ve been adding over the past year. 86% specifically like the occasional movie music track. 87% do not think there are too many repeats.
We asked what might keep you from listening at work longer or more often.
- One third of you said you simply can’t. A note to the nearly one-third of you have daytime reception problems: don’t forget about listening online at kdfc.com. Our streaming broadcast is more popular than ever.
- While more than 2/3rds of you don’t perceive an increase in commercials, the rest of you do. An important FYI: In January we reduced the number of commercial time by 10%. When was the last time you heard a radio station do that?
Since ‘Mozart in the Morning’ has been number the #1 KDFC feature for 7 years, we didn’t ask about it. Your favorites this time are:
- The new ”Hoyt’s Morning Blend at 10am,”
- “Islands of Sanity” at 2 and 7,
- San Francisco Symphony concerts Tuesday nights at 8
- and ticket giveaways.
There are a few shows that those that know them have huge passion for, but also got a high number of folks who don’t know the shows.
- “The Big One at 1” in the afternoon
- “The Off to School Request” at 7:30 weekday mornings.
- “The Blind Date” at 8:30 weekday mornings
- “Double Play” weekday afternoons at 4,
- “From the Top” Sunday nights at 7.
Haven’t heard these features before? I invite you to check them out this week, and tell me what you think at blueth@kdfc.com
Many of you enjoy the new SF Opera broadcasts once a month on Sunday nights, and the Sacred Concert each Sunday morning, but these shows have a few more of you who prefer something else. We’ve seen this in many surveys over the years: There’s a high passion from some of you for vocal music, and polarizing passion from some who don’t enjoy classical vocals on the radio at all.
Here are some specific comments from the Spring 2008 Survey:
- I love your programming, has some serious stuff but also has a lot of fun segments
- Maybe a little more progressive programming occasionally. Less typical repeated classics and a few more "curve balls".
- I'm starting to hear what sounds like contemporary "classical" composers that are somewhat "new-age" sounding. I'm actually liking this trend.
- I like the station and I appreciate the friendly attitudes. I encourage people who don't know anything about this type of music to listen -- they won't feel like they are in over their heads. It's a very friendly place for beginners.
- You have the best DJs in the business. I love feeling like they are a part of my family and they entertain me as well as my 11 yr old daughter. Sometimes I even call my mom at work and say, "Did you here it when Hoyt said..."
- While I am particularly fond of 17th - 19th century music, I appreciate that you play the "newer stuff" too, including the movie soundtracks.
- Overall I am pleased with this station, and I consider it the best classical station I have heard. The one genre of music that is rarely played is medieval/early Renaisance music.
- The station has gotten even better in the past year! I was worried that it would be watered down because of the new owners but there is more variety and KDFC takes more chances in the kind of music it plays. It is a very "smart" radio station.
- Please stop the movie music.
- Keep on playing some of the newer composers, like Ludovico Einaudi and Morten Lauridsen. I also love the new movie soundtracks.
- I don't need to hear Obi Wan in the middle of my day. Some of the "contemporary classical" sounds like schlock. I know you rely on greatest hits to keep listeners unafraid and thinking positive, and I really appreciate it when you program a new interpretation of a standard. Thank you for asking for feedback.
- Keep up the great work! I love the casual non-snooty approach to classical music. If all classical stations did what you're doing, classical performing organizations would have a much easier time drawing audiences and paying their bills. Spread the word to other stations in other markets!
- There should be more variety instead of primarily orchestral music, though that would probably upset the fan base.
- I like the station very much. I appreciate that atonal works do not dominate the programming.
- Keep up what you've been doing, a bit more baroque,
- Less baroque and early classical crap, please.
- I don't care to listen to Opera, but I don't mind that you play it we're a diverse community, and the time that Opera is playing on the radio I can do something else.
- I don't like hearing instrumental versions of opera music -- that makes me change the station! If you're going to play opera music, and I hope you do, then why can't we hear the vocal part as well - and not just during opera broadcasts...
- I would enjoy hearing more opera in the daily mix of programming or as a feature. Like the "Big one at 1" except maybe it could be "The fat ladies at 5" !!! (Hee, hee, Ha, ha).
- I'd like to see a listing of tracks played color keyed to musical eras. ie: Bach/Vivaldi would be in orange for Baroque, Mozart / Handel would be green for.... etc.
- I would love to hear more full-length compositions the current format of short pieces is understandable the pacing is familiar to all of us who grew up with Top-40 radio. I would love to hear complete works more through the day.
- You've done a great job enhancing the level of music you play. Please continue educating us as consumers of classical music by expanding the repertoire. The addition of movie music is a good example
- The ‘Everyone Remain Calm’ signs...I thought those were great.
- This is a long test..
- The website has vastly improved since the purchase of KDFC. It is easy to navigate and listen to music online. Having been the recipient of a set of free tickets, I love entering the contests that you offer. I also appreciate the ability to purchase a CD of something I have recently heard.
- Love the alphabet soup. Please add more of the obscure composers into the daily/weekly mix.
- I always try to find out what is on "Sacred Concert" on Sunday mornings. And your web site always says something about "a special blend..." or words to that effect. How about telling us what the blend really is?
- I know that the playlist links to ArkivMusic, to purchase CDs. I'd love to be able to also purchase downloadable tracks, since I listen to recorded music almost exclusively on my computer or iPod.
- Please, please do not switch the format.
- Thanks for helping to make my workday much, much better!
- Thanks for many great things. I like the idea of the concerts at Bimbo's and other settings to bring classical music to a new group of listeners. Community involvement is exemplary.
- I would like to see more KDFC events down in the South Bay. I'm sorry that I will not make the one this weekend
- The Big Island was a splendid idea - finally competing with other local stations for Sunday morning.
- Hoyt's morning show is terrific. I love the way he mixes up the teaser questions and music to appeal to a younger audience (I drive my kids to school with his show on).
